Antonina Matviyenko is a Ukrainian politician who has served as the Governor of Saint Petersburg since 2011. She is the first woman to hold the office. Matviyenko was born on 12 April 1981 in Kyiv, Ukraine. She graduated from the Kyiv State University in 1983 with a degree in history. She then went on to earn a degree in law from the same university in 1986. Matviyenko began her political career in 1989 when she was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. She then served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine from 1997 to 1998. In 2003, Matviyenko was appointed as the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. She served in this position until 2011 when she was appointed as the Governor of Saint Petersburg. Matviyenko is married to Vladimir Matviyenko, a former Soviet diplomat.
