It serves the purpose of supporting the stadium’s roof. The 133 metre tall (span of 315m) arch specifically supports all the weight of the northern portion of the roof, 60 percent of the southern part.

The point of the entire thing is to ensure there are no internal columns that might obstruct view of the field from the fans.

It also serves as a distinctive aesthetic feature for the stadium that can be view from the distance.
